Real leather or vegan leather?

We build the same boot in two materials. One is real cow leather. One is man made. This page shows you how to tell them apart in about a minute, and which of the two is the right pair for you.

The two names in the dropdown

On every pair of our leather boots there is a Material option with two choices. Here is what sits behind each name, and what we call it for the rest of this page.

Top Grain Leather

The real one

Genuine cow hide, top grain, which is the outer layer of the skin. We have it lightly sanded so the print lies flat and even across the boot.

On this page we simply call it real leather. In the factory photos below it is labelled top grain leather (sanded grain).

Premium Vegan Leather

The man made one

Microfiber leather. Hair fine nylon fibers pressed into a mat, then bound with a water based plastic. Among the synthetics it sits at the top, above vinyl and above the plastic coated fabric that also gets sold as vegan leather.

On this page we call it vegan. In the factory photos it is labelled microfiber leather. Same material, three names.

Both materials are finished the same way on the front, so the front is no help at all. The back is where they stop pretending to be each other.

These are the two materials we actually build with, photographed side by side at our factory. The red notes are the factory labels, not ours.

Run all four. If all four agree you have your answer. If only two agree you are still guessing.

One thing to rule out first. If the back is woven cloth or a knitted net rather than felt, it is neither of these. That is cheap plastic coated fabric, the bottom of the ladder, and the coating peels off the backing over time.

Neither one wins outright. They are good at different things, and the honest answer is that it depends on how you wear your boots.

This changes your size. Vegan barely stretches, so measure your foot and take the half size up if you land between two. Real leather gives and moulds, so a snug fit is fine and will end up better. Our size chart walks you through measuring, and if your feet are broad start with the wide fit guide.

Do not get fooled

Four things people get wrong

“It looks too perfect, so it must be fake.” No. Our real leather is sanded smooth on purpose so the print can sit flat on it. Smooth does not mean fake. What you should look for instead is a pattern that repeats. Animals never repeat. Machines always do.

“There is no chemical smell, so it must be real.” Backwards. Our vegan material uses a water based plastic, so it comes out of the box smelling of nothing at all. The cheap synthetics are the smelly ones. Real leather does have a faint warm scent, but smell is the weakest test on this page, so never decide on it alone.

“The tag says Genuine Leather, so it is the good stuff.” No. Genuine Leather is the name of a lower grade, usually a split from under the good layer. It is real, but it is the weaker part of the hide. The grades above it are top grain and full grain. Ours is top grain.

“Vegan leather is all the same thing.” Not remotely. Vegan leather is an umbrella that covers vinyl, plastic coated fabric, microfiber, and the plant based ones that still need plastic to hold together. The useful question is never “is it vegan”, it is which synthetic. Ours is microfiber, the top of that group.

All the specs and photos on this page come straight from our factory. Real leather is natural cow hide, top grain, 1.8 mm, with the better softness and breathability. Vegan is microfiber, 1.4 mm, with the better water resistance and the lower price. One honest note on the vegan pair: the upper material itself is synthetic, but we have not finished verifying the lining and the adhesives, so we do not describe the finished boot as vegan.
